This cute super chunky newborn baby hat is taken from this lovely newborn hats knitting pattern collection.
This pompom hat for newborn babies is a really fast knit. You can knit it up in less than an hour using only a small amount of super chunky yarn. The yarn in the photo is Lana Grossa Regazza Lei, a pure wool yarn that is lovely to work with.
Super Chunky Newborn Hat Knitting Pattern
With 10mm needles, cast on 25 stitches.
There are 17 rows in total in this pattern. These rows are written stitch by stitch to make it easy to follow. The hat is worked top down.
Row 1 – p5, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p5, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p5
Row 2 – k6, p1, k1, p1, k7, p1, k1, p1, k6
Row 3 – as row 1
Row 4 – as row 2
Row 5 – as row 1
Row 6 – as row 2
Row 7 – p1, k1, p1, k1, p7, k1, p1, k1, p7, k1, p1, k1, p1
Row 8 – p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k5, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k5, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1
Row 9 – as row 7
Row 10 – as row 8
Row 11 – as row 7
Row 12 – as row 8
Row 13 – knit 1 row
Row 14 – (k1,p1) to end of row, k1 (start of rib)
Row 15 – (p1, k1) to end of row, p1
Row 16 – as row 14
Row 17 – cast off following pattern as row 15
With the ribbing at the bottom, bring the two side edges into the middle, forming a square, and sew up the back seam. Sew up the top seam.
Using a pompom maker, a fork, or your finger, make two small pompoms and attach to the hat corners. The hat also looks great without pompoms, and gives a cat ear impression.
